This week’s post is unusual in that it was written by a staff member of the independent group consumersadvocate.org. Here at Wellness Made Simple, we are delighted to present fair and balanced treatment of the essential oil industry, and we hope that you enjoy this article. More information on the organization, its work, and the author are included at the end of the post. Presentation of this post does not mean that we endorse any specific findings of the study mentioned or that we make any medical claims on behalf of doTERRA oils. We applaud the effort that was invested to assemble facts and publish them for use by concerned consumers.

Essential oils have become increasingly popular in the last century, not only for their wonderful smell but also for their health and medicinal attributes.  Essential oils are usually sold separately but are also found in many cosmetics, soaps and even shampoos. However, the true benefits come from buying the pure oils themselves.

Essential oils have gained extreme popularity as a very pure, safe, and cost-effective way to address a number of different health issues.  With the rising cost of health care, it’s no wonder that many of us are turning to aromatherapy as an alternative form of treatment.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils are made from either extracting or distilling different parts of a plant which includes the leaves, bark, roots, peels and even resin.  Just one small drop of an essential oil can have powerful healing effects because the oils have the most potent healing compounds.

The oils are usually taken orally, topically or diffused throughout our homes. Of course, each of us is different in how an oil might affect us, but there have been many studies done over the years about the many benefits of essential oils

Below are eight different ways that an essential oil can help address different health issues.

  1. Supports Healthy Immune Systems

Many essential oils have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal properties. Some can ward off viruses to help support a healthy immune system and fight off infections.  The substances found in some of these oils have the potential to fight off foreign bodies that affect our health. Many oils support a healthy immune system, but ginger, eucalyptus and lemon often hold the highest beneficial results.

  1. Hormonal balance

There are some essential oils that help balance hormonal, thyroid, estrogen, and testosterone levels.  Geranium, thyme, and clary have been known to balance estrogen and progesterone levels (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28326753) which can help with infertility issues as well as menopausal symptoms.

  1. Digestion

Essential oils are also known to help with digestive issues.  There are some essential oils that help with stomach spasms, IBS, and some gastrointestinal issues.  The oils work to help stimulate your digestive enzymes to help break down and absorb the good nutrients as well as fat and protein necessary for digestive health.

  1. Extra Energy

Essential oils are also help with increasing our energy levels and can even help athletes improve their performance.  Some oils increase oxygen reception in our brains and can make us feel energized, focused and refreshed.  Grapefruit, lemongrass, eucalyptus and rosemary are among the best for an energy boost.

  1. Calming effect

Essential oils are best known for their ability to help calm us down and reduce stress levels.  Some essential oils, in fact, have a mild sedative effect which can make us feel peaceful, relaxed and calm.  Some oils also help us sleep due to this tremendous calming effect. Ylang ylang, chamomile and bergamot are among the favorites for their anti-stress properties.

  1. Pain Reliever

There have been studies done that back up the claim that there are many positive effects with essential oils to help reduce pain.  Many cancer patients will use different types of essential oils to help with overall healing and pain management.  Lavender, rosemary, thyme, ginger and chamomile are among the oils that are supposed to help with pain.

  1. Reduce Toxins

Another one of the more popular uses of essential oils are their use to detoxify you and your home.  As we inhale so many different chemicals daily just by being outside, some essential oils will act as a shield to help us detoxify.

Many hospitals will use essential oils to keep the air clean and help keep the hallways and rooms detoxified.

Some of the more popular oils for detoxification are grapefruit, lemon, funnel and peppermint.

  1. Helps Headaches

Essential oils are also used as a natural migraine and headache reliever because the oils help address the headache naturally rather than mask the pain.  The idea is that the oils help with improved circulation and stress, both of which are significant causes of headaches and migraines.

Lavender, rosemary and eucalyptus will open up the nasal airways which helps with blood flow and promotes circulation which can relieve headaches.

These are just eight of the many benefits of essential oils.  They are an effective, natural form of therapy and can help with many different health issues.

The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for essential oils is that they are concentrated, pure and not diffused with other fillers.  The closer they are to the plant origin, the more effective their healing powers.
